I would urge people to read The Hidden Persuaders by Vance Packard, published in 1957. I read this at school as part of one of the courses I took. I always take with a pinch of salt newspapers, the news on the telly and any other communications that I can’t experience on a personal level. I married a market researcher so I know what I’m talking about … or do I? … oh dear
