POND LIFE

…….. and so the work continues dans le jardin ……..

The pond was lined and filled yesterday. It now needs landscaping and will have a quaint little rivulet to help aeration. The book says I must be patient and let the water balance itself before bunging some fish in. As goldfish are only about 99p each I reckon it’s worth taking a chance but Lo, she is a terrible Goddess says all life is precious* and we must wait. She reinforced her edict with a swift kick in the shins – she has no conception of relaxing her standards at weekends.
I asked whether my life came under the umbrella of this statement and she laughed ………. I like it when she laughs ……..

.

(I didn’t use quite those words – what I actually said was ……… oh, I can’t say that out loud …. Lo,TG Ed)

I too, spent the day working on the fraccy pond… only mine has more more work to do. We’ve just cleared away the detritus that was growing there, put down the bordering blocks and have a mound of dirt settling to become a home for the rocks that will make the little waterfall that will run down to the pond. I don’t want fish but the fraccy boy does seem to think he’ll be able to have a duck once it’s done.

    fracas replied:

Lovely work though DP… will we at some point, have to endure a photo of you in the pond?

Hmmm. I should try shin-kicking. It seems to work for the TG…

    daddyp replied:

Funny you should say that Fraccy. When the TG very kindly voted me the person to stand in the pond as it was filling up so that I could push and pull the lining into the best place [under direction of course], I suggested she should get my cardboard box and take a piccy. She thought that avid readers should have an undisturbed Sunday though ……

    fracas replied:

I knew it! I think I’ve been our fracretary so long I’m starting to read your mind.

    Scary though that is…

    daddyp replied:

    Scary for both of us!!!

    very nice indeed…. [pond envy ;-) ]

    daddyp replied:

Surely you could make one …… get the teen to do the digging [or one of her many admirers] and you can stand there issuing orders and pointing …..

    70steen replied:

gawd you do make me laugh….. teen? … dig?… do stuff in the garden?…….see you have set me off laughing again

    daddyp replied:

Assert your natural authority ……. after all it is for nature ……..

    70steen replied:

do two goldfish in a bowl count as doing my bit for nature ;-)

    daddyp replied:

That’s quite enough I’d have thought …… no need to go over the top ……..

    70steen replied:

I cleaned them out today too … that may well have been a bit over the top !!

    daddyp replied:

Good heavens, you’ll be knitting your own sandals soon and sculpting in tofu …….

    70steen replied:

as long as I avoid macramé I should be ok

    daddyp replied:

You could start growing your own spaghetti and then knit tea-cosys – you’d certainly be doing your bit then.

A pond!! So if there’s a 2 for 1 sale on goldfish does that mean their lives are only half as precious … ?

    daddyp replied:

Well it depends how you look at it really ……. I still reckon it’s worth a chance …. *OWWWW* …… no I don’t ……. obviously – tee hee

Can you still win goldfish at fairgrounds? …… perhaps that’s my best solution …….

    gitwizard replied:

Yes, but only if you have a box on your head…..

It looks lovely – I found a baby frog in our garden today – I think he’s lost shall I send him to you?

    gitwizard replied:

@Kate: are you sure ‘he’ is not a she? Froglets are reknowned for their lack of navigation skills…..

    daddyp replied:

Kate – that’s a very kind thought, I’m not sure if she/he would survive the journey. I found a toad the other day so I reckon next year we’ll have much too much wild life prancing around.

GW – Froglet is way scarier than 70’s – tread VERY carefully ………..

    gitwizard replied:

Way scarier than 70’s ? NOOOOooooooooo!!!!!!!!

How very seductive. “Why yes, visitor come in for some tea and scones. Let’s sit by the pond, shall we. Let’s take a stroll… you go ahead and I’ll catch up in a moment. The path goes to the left.” Diabolical. Of course, I suppose there’s the other possibility that the pond is just pretty to look at…

    daddyp replied:

The first postulation is fairly near the mark Jamie …. my diabolical and cunning plans are coming to fruition at LAST ……. *demonic laugh* followed by a rather effeminate *cackle*

Wow DP that is truly lovely!! You did a terrific job!! I will be so glad when Walter retires and we can get our pond work done.

It’s a mess. The people that lived here before us allowed anyone and everyone to dump stuff in the pond.

Our first summer here we pulled out things like old bath tubs and even a refrigerator.

It’s loaded with wonderful fish but we don;t dare eat them.

We are also experiencing a great deal of erosion and will be lucky if it doesn’t break through and meet up with our neighbor’s pond.

Ours is about an acre in size so it will require an excavator. Walter plans on digging it deeper and using the dirt to shore up the banks.

We also have to replace a stone blind ditch that is failing and put in new drain pipes at each side. The ones we currently have are very small and don’t work well at all.

Ours is a natural pond and sits lower than the surrounding properties. So when it rains we are basically the water shed for the entire street.

But, it is also spring fed. So we hope to get all of this done and in the process get absolutely any and all junk that may be at the bottom finally removed.

After that and a small wait we are going to have a water test done and hope that it shows up clean and free from any and all hazardous materials.

Then we can introduce new fish and hopefully be able to catch and eat our own fish.

Last but not least Walter is also going to build an island out in the middle for our fowl to roost and keep themselves and their babies safe.

Whewwww….I’m tired after writing this book. So I’ll just say Cheerio!!:-)

    daddyp replied:

Great book Jackie!! The largest pond we had was only about a 1/3 of an acre in size. It belonged to an Elizabethan house we were renovating. It was where the clay was originally dug out to make the bricks to build the house [along with oak framing]. The pond teamed with fish and I used to go swimming in it when the weather was hot – great fun.

    daddyp replied:

Nooter! – come here and I’ll dry you off – DON’T SHAKE YOURSELF!!!

Daddy dear, the pond looks stunning. You are indeed a fabulous husband (swoon).

    daddyp replied:

Indeed, the TG can’t believe her luck Mumsy. I’ve often heard her mumbling “Why me?”

Oh sweetie! My monster-in-law says that too! Does this actually mean that they feel blessed?

    daddyp replied:

That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it ……
